Essence Satterfield was born in Los Angeles, CA and raised in Eugene, OR. Coming up in the world class hospitality industry of Hawaii, Essence has been working at Hey Love in Portland, OR since its opening in 2018. You can often catch her at the bar during off hours, putting her horticulture degree to work as the natural greenthumb for its famous indoor jungle.

Recently featured in the Washington Post and The Oregonian with her sister Kia for their endless work with the Black liberation movement. As a mother of two amazing children, Essence is currently founding the Rainbow Urban Farm School which will be focusing on underserved communities, specifically connecting youth to their food sources via production practices and urban farming.A tireless innovator, Essence has been virtually bartending during the COVID-19 pandemic for NUBOP—a BIPOC jazz popup produced in Hey Love—creating top shelf cocktails you might find at the bar, but can easily make at home. Catch her for one of her many talents, perspectives, and community practices on Instagram [@danceinyourblood] if you want to get in touch about a project.
